How to Evaluate Weight-Loss Supplement Claims

Start with the finished product, not the headline. Most supplements marketed for rapid weight loss have not been proven safe and effective for meaningful long-term weight control.
A five-question test
- Is the claim about an ingredient or the finished product?
- Are exact amounts disclosed?
- Were studies randomized, controlled and conducted in humans similar to the intended user?
- Is the effect statistically significant and meaningful in real life?
- Are risks, interactions and uncertainty presented as clearly as benefits?
Testimonials are not trials
Personal stories cannot establish causation, typical results or safety. Use them, at most, as anecdotes—not evidence.
