Green tea comes from Camellia sinensis. Research has examined catechins and caffeine for effects on energy expenditure and body weight. Federal summaries describe any weight effect as small or modest, and some reviews conclude it is not clinically meaningful.

Extract is not the same as tea

Concentrated green tea extracts can produce adverse effects such as nausea, abdominal discomfort and increased blood pressure. Rare liver injury has also been reported, and interactions with some medicines are documented.

Buyer takeaway

Ask how much extract a product contains and whether stimulant/caffeine exposure is disclosed. “Contains green tea” is not enough to predict a meaningful result.
